Hurlers hot, Curley ready to defend

It’s heating up in the IAAM softball league as defending A Conference champions Archbishop Spalding High School, Severn, and defending B Conference champions, Maryvale Preparatory School, Brooklandville, continue their winning ways. On April 13, Spalding’s top hurler, Stephanie Weigman, threw a no-hit, shutout by sitting down all but one batter in a 1-0 win over home team Institute of Notre Dame, Baltimore, at Patterson Park. The Cavs (5-1, 9-2) are ranked No. 3 and the Indians (4-2, 12-2) are right behind them in the Metro Prep Poll. The Cavaliers and Indians will meet again April 27 at Randazzo Park.

The Maryvale Lions remain in first place after defeating McDonogh School, Owings Mills, last week. The Lions, (6-1, 7-1) have held their opponents to just 14 runs while plating 76. The team is led by junior Heather Peluso, pitcher.

After a four-point loss to Loyola Blakefield, Towson, in the MIAA, the Archbishop Curley, Baltimore, track team has since defeated Calvert Hall College High School, Towson, 83-59, Mount St. Joseph, Irvington, 75-71 and McDonogh, 100-46.

First-place finishes in the win over Calvert Hall came from Ray Ridgeway in the 100-meter dash (11.5), 4 x 200 (1:35.6) and the 4 x 100 with a time of 45.1.

Ryan Hemphill placed first in the intermediate hurdles with a time of 43.7 and in the high jump (5-feet-6-inches) while Kevin Franklin took first in the 200-meter race with a time of 23.4 and posted a 40-feet-7-inches in the triple jump. Erik Anderson took first in the 3200 meter with a time of 9:54.
