Eric Lusby scored four goals as the Loyola men’s lacrosse team won its first Division 1 national championship May 28 with a 9-3 victory over the University of Maryland.

Lusby’s four goals gave him 17 for the tournament, a new player record and he scored the last three for the Greyhounds, who nursed a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

Chris Layne had three goals for Loyola in the win.

Maryland jumped out to a 1-0 lead during the first quarter thanks to a goal by Jesse Bernhardt. The Greyhounds answered with a goal of their own and then went up near the end of the first quarter with a goal from Eric Lusby, his 51st of the season.

Maryland tied the game and took the lead, 3-2, on scores by Mike Chanenchuk and Kevin Cooper during the early part of the second quarter.

The Greyhounds went on a major run, first getting a goal by Pat Byrnes. Then, during the last six minutes of the first half, Loyola’s Mike Sawyer and Phil Dobson each got scores to give Loyola a 5-3 lead.
