Government is not ‘brother’s keeper’

Tony Magliano (CR, March 24) has his priorities backward. We are our brother’s keeper, and should be especially mindful of this during Lent. It is not the deeply indebted and broke federal government’s responsibility to help the needy – it’s ours.

It has been shown that Americans are the most generous people in the world, and, at the same time, the federal government has been an abysmal failure, when it comes to “poverty” and make-work programs. Most importantly, the government is broke and must cut spending in all areas now, or there won’t even be money to run government programs, much less give to unconstitutional “worthy” causes, as much as we would like to.
