Good Samaritan Hospital remains on U.S. News & World Report’s Top 50 rankings

Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore has been ranked among the Top 50 in three categories in U.S. News & World Report’s 2010-11 Best Hospitals issue: gastroenterology, 46th; geriatrics, 49th; and orthopedics, 49th.

According to a news release from Good Samaritan, 152 medical centers made the rankings, among 1,740 that were qualified for consideration.

“We are proud to have been named one of U.S. News & World Report’s best hospitals for two years in a row,” says Jeffrey A. Matton, president of Good Samaritan. “This achievement is a testament to our exceptional physicians, nurses and staff and our commitment of providing safe, quality care and excellent service to our patients every day.”

The rankings appear in the August issue of the magazine, which is available on newsstands July 27.

In the specialties in which Good Samaritan earned distinction, rankings were driven by hard data, such as death rates, procedure volume, and balance of nurses and patients.

To be considered in one of those specialties, a hospital had to meet one of four criteria: teaching hospital; affiliated with a medical school; have at least 200 beds; or have 100 or more beds and the availability of four or more types of medical technology, such as a PET/CT scanner and certain precision radiation therapies.

Good Samaritan Hospital is a 317-bed community teaching facility located at the corner of Loch Raven Boulevard and Belvedere Avenue in northeast Baltimore. It is part of MedStar Health, a not-for-profit, regional healthcare system.
