Elizabeth Phelan hopes to grow Loyola-Govans partnership

As St. Mary of the Assumption School in Govans continues developing a unique educational partnership with Loyola College in Maryland, Baltimore, Elizabeth Phelan said she sees “amazing opportunities” for strengthening the school.
Launched last year, the partnership provided new computers at St. Mary’s and tutoring and educational outreach provided by 130 Loyola students. Special speech pathology services for St. Mary’s students were made available and the school also offered numerous enrichment activities including dance and sign language classes.
“It’s an excellent program,” said Ms. Phelan, St. Mary’s new principal. “The school is able to provide students a truly excellent program, some of which they won’t be able to get anywhere else. We want to see it grow.”
Ms. Phelan most recently served as principal of Father Kolbe School in Canton for five years, where she was honored as an archdiocesan distinguished principal of the year in 2006. She is a former principal of St. Anthony School in Baltimore, a teacher at St. Mark School in Catonsville, a teacher at Immaculate Conception School in Towson and a teacher in Dover, Del.
The parishioner of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Towson University and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the Catholic School Leadership Program of Loyola College in Maryland.
