Don’t forget Catholic High founder

“Connect to Catholics” (CR, Sept. 25) was informative and historically interesting. Having taught in the archdiocese for eighteen years (4 at St. Stephen, Bradshaw and 14 at The Catholic High School of Baltimore), I would like to draw attention to another person who made a difference here – Mother Mary Generosa McCafferty, provincial of The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia.

She visited many schools in Maryland where our Sisters taught, and interceded with Archbishop Curley to build a much-needed secondary school for girls. He granted permission, but the Sisters would have to build and maintain it. Backed by our congregation, Mother Generosa went forward and proposed that it be named “The Curley High School.” He crossed off “Curley” and replaced it with “Catholic.” The Catholic High School opened in 1939. The rest if history, as it has given many graduates to Maryland.
