Deacon Thomas Yorkshire dies at 72

A funeral Mass for Deacon Thomas Yorkshire will be offered at 10 a.m. April 21 at St. Gregory the Great, Baltimore. Deacon Yorkshire died April 11. He was 72.

Born in Mechanicsville in 1935, Deacon Yorkshire was a son of the late Booker T. and Hazel Yorkshire Everett.

After his 1952 graduation from Banneker High School in Loveville, he went on to serve more than 20 years in the U.S. Army and was ordained a deacon in 1986.

As a deacon, he assisted the pastor with the daily operation of St. Gregory the Great parish and continued to serve the parishioners after his official 1998 retirement until his death, said Tanya VaLaine Williams, parish secretary.

“He was here in the office almost every day, and if he wasn’t here, he was out visiting the sick and shut-in parishioners,” Ms. Williams said. “He will be dearly missed.”

Deacon Yorkshire is survived by an aunt, Evelyn Dyson of Mechanicsville; three uncles, James Yorkshire of Mechanicsville, and John and Daniel Yorkshire of Baltimore; a sister-in-law, Vivian Yorkshire of Mechanicsville; and several nieces and nephews.

A wake service will be held at the church April 21 at 9 a.m. and a viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. April 20 at Albert Wylie Funeral Home at 638 N. Gilmor St. in Baltimore. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 9 a.m. April 26.
