Clothesline breaks the silence

A Clothesline Project display was organized by students of College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore, on Doyle Lawn May 1-3 with the theme “Break the Silence.”

T-shirts were hung outside to help build awareness and bear witness to violence against women.

Women’s studies students conducted T-shirt message-designing workshops at the Baltimore Pre-Release Unit for Women and the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in a collaborative, service-learning project.

Potent messages on the shirts were created by women who have been impacted by violence or in memory of those harmed. The messages read: “No longer a victim,” “I’m a survivor,” “Broke the silence,” “I said no” and “Forced to be silent.”

The Clothesline Project is supported by the women’s studies minor program, psychology department, campus ministry and student development.

A prayer service was held near the display.
