Little Sisters of the Poor receive William Donald Schaefer award

The Little Sisters of the Poor of St. Martin’s Home for the Aged in Catonsville received the William Donald Schaefer “Helping People” award April 16.

The Little Sisters, nominated for the award by the Maryland Comptroller’s office, were recognized for the care they provide to needy senior citizens in the community.

The award was created to honor the legacy of public service by William Donald Schaefer, former governor and comptroller, on the first anniversary of his death.

The Little Sisters of the Poor are recipients from one of 24 jurisdictions state-wide.

Lewis Contractors wins award for St. Clement construction

The construction company that renovated St. Clement I, Lansdowne has received an award of excellence for their work at the church.

Lewis Contractors, which renovated St. Clement I in 2011, received an award of excellence from the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Baltimore Metro Chapter April 19, said Deacon Paul A. Gifford, the church’s deacon and pastoral life director.

The church – which spent $500,000 on the project – was painted, had new flooring, lighting, ceiling and a wall installed, Deacon Gifford said.

“It went from a cold, dark, quiet church to a vibrant, open, welcoming church,” Deacon Gifford said. “One of the amazing things is that it makes the music more vibrant.”

The company has completed projects at other churches in the archdiocese, including the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore; St. Ignatius, Baltimore; and the Catholic Community St. Francis Xavier, Hunt Valley.

Archdiocese reaches out after fire

After an April 10 fire at Pleasant Zion Baptist Church caused its roof to collapse, Cardinal Edwin F. O’Brien offered the use of space at neighboring St. Luke, Edgemere.

Pleasant Zion Baptist Church declined the offer, said Father Kevin Farmer, St. Luke’s temporary administrator. The churches are located about two miles apart.
