Cartoon perpetuates stereotype

I object very strongly to the cartoon (CR, Oct. 25) on page 11, which shows a “scientist” brushing off God. This perpetuates the stereotype that science opposes religion, a total reversal of the reality of Christianity for many centuries, since the time of St. Augustine.

It is true that there are strident atheists who denounce religion and CLAIM the mantle of science (Richard Dawkins of England comes to mind), but those shrill critics are invariably wrong on all three of history, religious teaching and scientific facts.

Despite media attempts to promote the theme of “science vs. religion” warfare, the reality of today is that many very capable scientists are working hard to show the compatibility of faith and science. It is no help at all for The Catholic Review to publish a cartoon that supports and enhances the atheistic viewpoint.
