Calvert Hall College dismisses head football coach

The administration of Calvert Hall College High School, Towson, after meeting with Coach Jay Robinson, announced that the school is seeking a new head coach for the 2007 football season. The school’s administration offered this statement: “We thank Jay for his integrity, dedication and hard work throughout the past eight years. Jay has been invited to continue as a member of the social studies faculty, where he is well respected for his professionalism and rapport with students and colleagues.”

According to MIAA Web site editor Gary Adornato (www.miaasports.com), the Cardinals went 45-37 under Robinson, but the team had a losing record in three of the last four years, including a 1-8 mark in 2006, which included an 0-5 record in the A Conference.

Robinson took over the program in 1999 after athletic director Lou Eckerl stepped aside as the team’s head coach. After a 4-7 record in his first season, Robinson led the Cardinals to three consecutive winning seasons, capped by a 10-1 mark in 2002.

Since that high-water mark, Calvert Hall’s best record was a 5-5 record in 2005 and the Cardinals have lost four consecutive times to arch-rival Loyola Blakefield, Towson, in their annual Thanksgiving game, including a 27-0 loss this fall.

Prior to returning to Calvert Hall, Robinson spent one season as the Director of Football Operations at the University of Maryland, after 19 seasons as an assistant coach at Towson University. Robinson coached defensive backs at Towson from 1979 through 1991 before taking over as the school’s offensive coordinator in 1992.

Calvert Hall has never won a MIAA varsity football title and has not won a varsity football championship of any type since 1982 when they were co-champions of the Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference.
