Bayhan is new principal of St. Mary’s High School, Annapolis

Making St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis more widely known is at the top of the agenda for Richard Bayhan, the school’s new principal and a parishioner of St. Mary, Annapolis.
“I want to make sure the good news about our school gets transmitted,” said Mr. Bayhan, a Detroit native who comes to St. Mary’s after serving as principal of a Catholic high school in Albany, N.Y.
Mr. Bayhan said he plans to work with the school’s development and recruitment staff to spread the word about the high school beyond the local parish community.
With approximately 565 enrolled at St. Mary’s and a capacity of about 590, Mr. Bayhan said there is room “for a few more students.”
The new principal will also be involved in reviewing the school’s accreditation with the Middle States Association.
Mr. Bayhan said one of his “strong suits” as a principal is promoting Catholic identity, and he is excited to be part of parish school that has the support of the faith community.
“I certainly believe good education doesn’t take place in a faith vacuum,” he said.
The new principal added that he is “overwhelmed by the friendliness and can-do spirit at St. Mary’s.”
Mr. Bayhan previously taught and served as a principal in Florida, Michigan and Indiana. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wayne State University in Detroit and a master’s degree in education from the University of South Florida in Tampa.
