Archdiocese Bicentennial Celebration Continues Tonight With Lecture On First U.S. Bishop, John Carroll

Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of Milwaukee and Church historian, will present, “Right from the Start—John Carroll, our First Bishop,” the first of a three-part lecture series entitled, the John Carroll Lectures.

Tonight’s lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Baltimore Basilica and is free and open to the public. The lecture series is hosted by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, which celebrates 200 years as an Archdiocese in 2008.

Archbishop Dolan will discuss the challenges faced by the nation’s first bishop, a cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton-the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, when the first Catholic Diocese of Baltimore was created in 1789.

The second lecture will be delivered by Mr. George Weigel on May 12, and Ms. Colleen Carroll Campbell’s talk on June 9 will conclude the series. Each discussion in the lecture series will take place at 7 p.m. at the Basilica.
