Established 1957. York Road at Overbrook.
Our Mission
We, the community of St. Pius X Catholic Church, declare Christ's mission as our own. We joyfully dedicate ourselves to become the presence of God in this community: that through our words and actions, the Gospel of Jesus will be proclaimed to all!
In the spirit of Jesus, we pledge to extend ourselves to others, both within and outside our community, to bring about the Kingdom of God to celebrate our faith together through liturgies that meet the diverse needs of our community to live our Christian values through service to others to challenge one another to spiritual growth through promotion of Christian education. We hear the call of God. We respond with our "Amen."
"The parish is called to be a place where people experience the joining of faith and daily life. It is to be a community in which people learn that their daily struggle to be loving and faithful to the Gospel, and to each other, is the lifeblood of the church, and the hope of the world." Archbishop William Borders
History
St. Pius X Church was built on land which had previously been the location of St. Vincent's Orphanage. The Church was finished in 1958 and dedicated to St. Pius X who had been canonized only four years before. Orginally the Church was designed to hold over 500 people, but it has been altered in more recent years to accommodate handicapped parishioners and to create a cross aisle midway in the nave which has reduced the capacity to 460 worshipers. The lower level of the Church was designed as a multipurpose auditorium/worship space which seats classrooms and an auditorium/gymnasium in 1968. Msgr. Joseph G. McCourt was appointed the first pastor and he served until 1967. The first rectory was a townhouse on Overbrook Road on the north side of the Church until a permanent rectory was built later on parish property on the south side of the Church. Msgr. McCourt was followed as pastor by Msgr. Gerard W. Broderick, Msgr. A. Thomas Baumgartner, Fr. Robert F. Lentz, Fr. Thomas J. Golueke and our present Pastoral Life Director, Mrs. Carol Pacione.
