Major Gift to Archdiocese’s Inner City Catholic Schools Scholarship Program to be Announced at Wednesday Event for Local Business Leaders, Philanthropists Who Support Catholic Education

Event will Mark 20th Year of Inner City Scholarship Program

A major gift to the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s inner city scholarship program, Partners in Excellence, will be announced at an event hosted by Archbishop William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore, Wednesday, September 7th at 7:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore. Archbishop Lori will be joined by local business executives and philanthropists for the announcement and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Partners in Excellence, which provides tuition assistance to at-risk, inner city youth wishing to attend a Catholic school.

The Partners in Excellence scholarship program was created by Cardinal William H. Keeler in 1996 and has provided more than 25,000 scholarships totaling more than $29 million to disadvantaged youth of Baltimore. Partners in Excellence scholarship recipients are 96% non-white and 79% are non-Catholic. Nearly nine out of 10 recipients graduate from high school on time, 82% enroll in a two- or four-year college.

During Wednesday’s event, Archbishop Lori will announce the recipient of the newly-named “Cardinal William H. Keeler Partners in Excellence Award,” given to individuals who advance the Church’s mission of transforming lives and communities through Catholic education, via the PIE program. This year’s recipient is Raymond A. “Chip” Mason, founder of Legg Mason, Inc. and the first chair of the Partners in Excellence Board of Advisors.
