To help protect your family from the financial burden of death or sudden injury, the Archdiocese of Baltimore provides basic and optional (supplemental) life insurance through CIGNA.
- You automatically receive basic term life insurance of two times your benefit salary (maximum $100,000). Your direct employer pays the full cost of this coverage.
- You may purchase additional life insurance (also known as Supplemental Life Insurance) for yourself at one half, one times, or two times your benefit salary (maximum $250,000).
- You have the following life insurance options for your family:
- Spouse: $10,000 in coverage
- Child: $5,000 in coverage for each dependent child.
Beneficiaries
You must designate a beneficiary for this benefit. Please complete a beneficiary designation form and return it with your enrollment form. You can change your beneficiary at any time by completing a new beneficiary form.
Evidence of Insurability
Evidence of insurability may be required if you do not enroll for the supplemental life insurance coverage or the dependent life insurance coverage when you first become eligible.
Imputed Income
The value of the first $50,000 of employer-provided life insurance is considered a tax free benefit. The value of your employer-provided life insurance in excess of $50,000 is considered taxable income to you (imputed income). The value is based on an IRS table according to your age. This value will be added to your W-2 as part of your taxable income. If you name a charitable organization as the beneficiary of your total benefit or the benefit in excess of $50,000, it will not be considered taxable income. Please contact the Division of Employee Benefits for further details.
